From the earliest days of photography and the waning days of the American Civil War, this is an original photograph from Gardner's Sketchbook of the War published in Washington, D. C. in 1865. Each print is a contact print from a glass negative exposed in the field at high noon and painstakingly preserved through the course of the long war.
